The development of cheaper drilling and pumping techniques has helped make it an increasingly popular alternative to surface water to meet growing global demand. Water from aquifers is generally of higher quality than surface water and is much less subject to seasonal and interannual variations, which makes it a more reliable source of supply.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many cities have turned to groundwater for<\/span> <b>drinking water supply<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and domestic because surface sources have been contaminated. Nearly half of the world&#8217;s population uses groundwater for drinking, and an increasing proportion of farmers rely on groundwater to irrigate their fields.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, huge reserves of non-renewable groundwater have enabled large irrigation projects in the middle of the Sahara and Arabian deserts. Also, undermining the sustainability of ongoing human uses has been linked to a reduced ability to support ecosystem functions. This unsustainable overexploitation can be avoided with proper management that incorporates resource understanding and realistic use scenarios.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-exploitation of groundwater in many places has already caused local or regional water tables to decline, making continued water extraction<\/span> <b>more difficult and costly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is already causing problems in many regions of Latin America. This finding is supported by satellite data showing <\/span><b>changes in total water storage<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as inferred from gravity measurements, which estimated a lowering of the water table.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, several recent studies have shown that several aquifers in large geographical areas near the coast have begun to fill with salt water of marine origin, which will make it impossible to continue practicing agriculture in some of these regions. .<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the 1950s, both population and irrigated areas have grown so much in Latin America that there has been no choice but to make ever-increasing use of groundwater. From March 21 (until 26), coinciding with the <\/span><b>Ninth World Water Forum<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Dakar, Senegal), numerous events focused on this and other highly relevant issues, such as sanitation, innovation or climate change, will take place<\/span> <b>.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5758 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/rainoflife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/foro-mundial-agua.jpg\" alt=\"World Water Forum\" width=\"164\" height=\"220\">The objective is to promote better management of underground resources, taking into account that they constitute 98% of the fresh water available on the planet. Some aquifers are so large that they could hold more than 30 times the water capacity of Spain. In fact, more than a quarter of the world&#8217;s population depends exclusively on these sources to meet their daily needs.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the UN, the threat to its sustainability is serious. For this reason, in the next World Water Forum, aquifers will have a prominent place, framed within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, the extreme pressure to which man subjects<\/span> <b>groundwater<\/b> reserves <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the planet could have terrible consequences in the medium term.
